The Cost of War Presentation
Mr. Cook’s “The Cost of War” presentation was an emotional deep dive into the life of soldiers from the American Civil War up until the present time. There was a clear and engaging focus on reflecting on the glory of battle that was presented by political figures to the struggles of the common soldier.
Mr. Cook presented war stories of many soldiers who died in battle, bringing life and connections to these men, which can still be reflected in modern soldiers as well. Many believe that soldiers fight for deep political beliefs especially in the civil war; Mr. Cook brought a differing perspective, humanizing these names by sharing letters they had written to their families and hopes they had for their futures beyond fighting for ideology. It was revealed that these men were just like us; normal people, sometimes kids, who just needed something to live or fight for.
Exhibits
Mr. Cook brought in many artifacts from own personal collection along with large presentation boards on loan from museums to give the students tangible and visual elements to war time. Artifacts included newspaper articles during pivotal periods of activism during American history, soldiers’ uniforms, a Cavalry Sabre, and real bullets. On the large presentation boards were pieces of history from important moments in soldiers’ lives and their battles with the government for fair treatment, and information on the history of medical devices and medical services/care during times of tragedy or war, some of which are still used to this day.
Personal Perspective
I, among all of my friends who showed up, had a deep connection with the presentation and were happy to be there. It was a unique learning experience that I got a lot out of when thinking about men who fought in the wars of the past. My fellow students were personally interested in the medical advances and technology made during the Civil War period. This engagement incited conversation for students and reflected interest in History. Mr. Cook did an excellent job with his video and presentation to captivate the audience and bring his point across when covering soldiers of the past.
