The Hudson Catholic soccer team lost to Saint Peter’s Prep at Caven Point on Monday, September 25, 2017. During the 2016 season the Hawks were defeated by St. Peter’s with a score of 3-0. This year the team was ready to face them, once again and looking for a victory.
Before the game, senior Christian Rodriguez spoke of confidence.
“If we come in strong we would have a higher chance to win,” Roridguez said. “Our underclassman are a little nervous, but hopefully when can give them the confidence to play a great game.”
One unique thing about the game was that Senior Pape Taha, who is usually an attacking center mid was put at center back.
When asked how he felt about it Taha said, “I was not really happy with the decision, but I am ready to sacrifice for the team.”
When the game began, Hudson Catholic got off to a bad start by conceding their first goal. Approximately 15 minutes after the first goal, St Peter’s scored their second goal.
At half time, some Hudson players felt as if they were not playing to their full potential and felt that they could do much more.
Hudson Catholic started the second half down 2-0, but came out energized as they played with confidence. After 20 minutes of an intense second half, Christian Rodriguez was able to score the Hawks first goal!
However, Hudson was still down by one point but the game wasn’t quite over yet.
Hudson Catholic continued to use their newly found momentum as seen 14 minutes before the half ends when Christian Rodriguez was able to get the ball from outside the box and banged it in. The crowd got off their feet and proceeded to scream and cheer on Hudson Catholic. The Hawks were able to tie the game!
After the goal, Hudson lost focus for a few seconds and Saint Peter’s Prep came firing back when they were able to get a penalty kick and were able to make it .
This was not good for the Hawks, and St. Peters continued on to score two more goals.
The game ended with a score of 5-2, but it was a good, competitive game.
Hudson continuously kept Saint Peter’s on their toes and was definitely not an easy game for either side.
When The Commentator got the opportunity to talk to Coach Rui during the Snyder game where Hudson won 9-0, he said, “Overall there were a lot of positives, a few things to address , but nice to get back to winning ways, and hopefully we can use this as a springboard for the rest of the season.”
The Commentator went on to ask Coach Rui how the season was looking so far, and his response was cautious yet optimistic.
“Ups and downs,” Rui said. “We had a great start to the season, but unfortunately we had a rough patch last week. We are trying hard to bounce back and we know from experience that we are capable of doing that.”
