Poem: “The Universal Weapon”
Ashley Ogando | On 14, Jan 2020
The echoes of the bullets firing shake a nation
As innocent and fulfilling lives are taken
Bodies, prayers, and shouts all seem to pile up
For some people, this riles them up
The cries of a mother holding her lifeless child is ignored
The news repeat over and over again, letting their viewers know
That one day, it could be them too, dead on the floor
Some people need a gun
Some people say it’s for fun
While others scream and choose to run
They say it’s for hunting and luck
But a person shouldn’t be anyone’s buck
One victim is brutally shot and killed but innocent
Just for the color of his skin
Another one is bruised and pummeled
Her husband aims for the gun to show her
The last one is at school and waiting for the bell to ring
But the last thing that rings is the sound of the clip in him
If a gun is so in need
Why do others have to pay the price and bleed?
