The Bronx Bombers’ and The Team from Queens’ 2017 Seasons

This 2017 baseball season in New York brought very different results to the Bronx and Queens. For the Yankees, a year that was supposed to be dedicated to building a future championship team became a playoff year with the help of a breakout year by rookie phenom Aaron Judge and key trades before the deadline. The Mets, on the other hand, coming off two seasons of making the playoffs, expected to build off that momentum but had a disappointing season due to injuries at the beginning of the season.
When the season started in the Bronx for the Yankees, no one thought they were going to have a record of 91-71 and a spot in the wild card game with the team they had. But after starting the season hot, they not only put life back in the team, but in the fans too.
By the end of July, they were still very much in the playoff race, so they made trades to get players like third baseman Todd Frazier, relief pitcher David Robertson, and starting pitcher Sonny Gray to help strengthen the team. With the addition of these players and the impressive seasons from players like catcher Gary Sánchez, shortstop Didi Gregorius, starting pitcher Luis Severino, right fielder and AL MVP contender Aaron Judge, and many other players, they stayed in the division race right up until the end of the season.
Even though they didn’t win the division, falling short to their rival the Boston Red Sox, they still easily made the AL Wild Card game and earned home field advantage. They play the Minnesota Twins on October 3 in the Bronx, where pitcher Luis Severino will face Ervin Santana.
While the Bronx Bombers used their bats and youth to lead them to the playoffs, the team from Queens didn’t have the same fate. They started off their season expecting another playoff season lead by their pitching staff, but that changed due to injury.
With injuries to pitchers Noah Syndergaard and Matt Harvey along with a tough second half of the season, only winning 23 of the 74 games of the half, their record was 70-92 for the season. Add that to the fact they were in the same division with the Washington Nationals, one of the best teams in the league, it was a tough season for the Mets. Due to the fact they had such a rough season, not only are they going into off season needing to to rebuild, but they will also be looking for a new manger because they have decided not to renew Terry Collins contract.
As the Yankees enter the playoffs with the hopes of making a World Series run, the Mets will enter the off season hoping to find a new manger to lead them back to where they were two years ago, the World Series.
