Super Bowl LII Wrap-Up

Super Bowl LII Wrap-Up

| On 08, Feb 2018

It’s time to celebrate in Philadelphia.

For the first time in franchise history, the Philadelphia Eagles are the Super Bowl champions. On February 4, 2018, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New England Patriots 41-33 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. With backup quarterback Nick Foles facing arguably one of the best quarterbacks of all time Tom Brady, they definitely went in to the game as the underdogs.

The game started with the Patriots winning the coin toss and choosing to defer until the second half, giving the Eagles the ball for the first drive. After the seven minute drive, the Eagles were forced to settle for a field goal to put the first points on the board. But the Patriots answered right away with a field goal of their own, making the game 3-3.

The Eagles and Patriots continued to go back and forth scoring touchdowns and field goals throughout the first half, but the missed field goal by the Patriots caused them to get a little behind the Eagles. And by the end of the first half the score was 22-12 in favor of the Eagles and it was time for the famous halftime show.

For this year’s Super Bowl the performer was Justin Timberlake, who wasn’t a newcomer to the event, having already performed in the 2001 and 2004 Super Bowls as a guest performer and with his former band. But this year was his first year as the main performer and he entertained the crowd with his hits like “Suit & Tie,” “Can’t Stop The Feeling,” and “Cry Me A River.” One of the highlights of his performance was when he sang a tribute to the late star Prince in honor of the game being in his hometown.

After Timberlake’s performance, the game was back on and the offensive dominance continued on both sides. With the Eagles having so much success on offensive, many wondered why the Patriots didn’t put in their pro bowl corner who played one of the biggest roles in winning them the 2015 Super Bowl, Malcom Butler.

Nevertheless the Patriots went on without him and started cutting into the Eagles ten point lead and by the fourth quarter, they took the lead for the first time with a touchdown, making the score 33-32 with 9:22 left in the game. This didn’t faze the Eagles though, because they not only took the lead back with a touchdown of their own, but also burned seven minutes off the clock giving the Patriots only two minutes to score at least a touchdown to take back the lead.

So with 2:21 left in the game, the Patriots had one last chance to take the lead back to win the big game, but blow it a mere 12 seconds later when the 4-time Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady fumbled the ball on their second play of the drive. After that, the Eagles took the ball back and scored one last field goal to secure the win with 1:05 left in the game.

The final score of the game was 41-33, giving Tom Brady and Bill Belichick their third lost in a Super Bowl and the underdog Eagles their first win in a Super Bowl ever. And to top off the night of underdogs winning, the former backup quarterback that many people didn’t have any faith in, Nick Foles, ended up being named the Super Bowl MVP.
